As of 2007, ferry operating costs paid for by the taxpayers of the State of Texas exceeded $16 million per year.
At this time, as it is free to ride, there is no need to purchase tickets for the Galveston Island ferry.
There are no pre-purchase or reservation options for the Galveston Island ferry. Ferry loading is on a first-come first-serve basis, with priority loading being given to medical and emergency vehicles.
Vehicles utilizing the Galveston Island - Port Bolivar ferry should not exceed a weight of 80,000 pounds. Additionally, they must have a maximum length of 65 feet, a maximum width of 8.5 feet, and a maximum height of 13.5 feet.
The Galveston Island ferry vessels have limited capacities for transporting vehicles. Please note that the boat can fill quickly, especially during the high-traffic season, when wait times to cross can be in excess of 2 hours.
